How To Thaw Frozen Feeders
Tip 1: Only buy your rodents from trusted, clean & hygienic suppliers.
Tip 2: Remove the laboratory grade feeders from the freezer & while using disposable gloves, place the required number of rodents into a zip-lock bag. Seal the bag carefully so water can’t get in & fluids can’t escape.
Tip 3: Choose overnight refrigeration option or warm water emersion option. Both of these options are safe & commonly used in the herpetology community:
Option 1: Over Night Refrigeration (3 to 6 hours+)
If you have time, place the feeders in the fridge overnight. This is preferred.
When ready to feed, take the rodents out of the fridge. Place the bagged rodents into a dedicated bowl containing warm (35 Degrees C is fine). Place a weight on top of the bag to keep the feeder/s fully submerged. Set timer for about 15 mins until feeder feels warm.
Ensure to feed your pet as soon as possible while the feeder is still warm.
Option 2: Warm Water Emersion (1 to 2 hours)
Place the bagged rodents into a dedicated bowl containing warm water (35 Degrees C is fine). Place a weight on top of the bag to keep the feeder/s fully submerged. Set timer for 1 hour for mice or quails or 2 hours for rats.
After timer goes off, ensure the feeder is thawed & then feed your pet as soon as possible while the feeder is still warm.
Tip 4: Use dedicated containers & equipment such as a dedicated thawing bowl.
Tip 5: Wash your hands carefully with soap and water after handling & keep feeder rodents & reptiles away from areas of human food preparation and handling areas.
Note: If frozen feeders have been thawed in the fridge or in a cooled esky and ">have not reached temperatures above 5 Degrees C, then it is ok to refreeze.A recent CSIRO study debunked the myth that it was not ok to refreeze thawed meat for humans under certain conditions. Refreezing is ok so long as thawing takes place in cooled conditions such as a fridge and the temperature of the meat doesn't rise above 5 Degrees C. If it is good enough for humans, then it is also ok for our pets.
